Blood Bank

Blood Bank is a place for collecting, screening, typing, processing, and storing whole blood, packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma and platelet concentrate, gathered as a result of blood donation, preserved for patient use. SFMMKPJSH Blood Bank, located in 1st floor of the hospital in the Clinical Laboratory area. We are committed to keeping pace with the demands of providing 24-hour service by cutting-edge technology and the most secure blood transfusion policy, and we maintain quality in every steps. We also provide blood and blood component to other hospitals in case of emergency. In SFMMKPJSH Blood Bank, most blood for transfusion is collected from family members and friends as a government registered hospital blood bank in Gazipur and Savar area.

We provide blood and blood product by standard protocol in all aspects of blood screening, grouping, compatibility testing, component preparation, storage, and transportation. Temperature of preserved blood and blood replacement donation system. Directed and Volunteer donors also donate blood, especially at times of need of rare blood group.

KPJ Blood Bank is government approved. We follow safe blood transfusion policy and maintain high quality in every aspects.

  • RH anti- body titre

 

WHO MAY DONATE BLOOD?

  • The volume of blood collected from a donor is about 450ml
  • Time required to compensate is 24 hrs of donation
  • Eligible healthy donors
    • 18 to 60 years
    • Hb ≥ Male: >13.5 gm/dl,  Female >11.5 gm/dl
    • Weight: Male >50 kg, Female >45 kg.
    • Males can donate blood every 3-4 months interval  
    • Females can donate every 4-6 months interval.

 

SOME INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR BLOOD DONATION:

  • Do not donate blood in empty stomach.
  • Maintain a gap of 30 min after meal.
  • Drink water (2 glass) before blood donation
  • Do not donate blood if you have fever, taking antibiotics or aspirin or antihistamine or insulin.
  • Do not take alcohol 24 hours prior blood donation.
  • Do not smoke 30 min before or after blood donation.
  • Avoid driving, vigorous exercise or playing tennis for at least 2-3hrs after blood donation.

 

SOME INSTRUCTIONS AFTER BLOOD DONATION: 

  • Eat and Drink something before leaving the blood donor area.
  • Drink more fluid for next 4 hours.
  • If there is bleeding from phlebotomy site raise arm and apply pressure to the site.
  • If fainting or dizziness occur either lie down or sit with the head between the knees.
  • If the symptom persist either telephone or returns to the blood bank or see a doctor.
  • Resume all normal activity if asymptomatic.
  • Remove bandage after 1 hour.

STORAGE OF BLOOD:

  • Self-Life: 35 days using CPDA1 as anticoagulant

PACKED RBC:  PREPARED BY CELL SEPARATION FROM DONATED WHOLE BLOOD.

  • Volume: 150-200ml
  • Self-Life: 35days using CPDA1 as anticoagulant
  • Storage Temp: 40 C   

 

FRESH FROZEN PLASMA (FFP): PREPARED BY CELL SEPARATION FROM DONATED WHOLE BLOOD.

  • Volume: 200-250ml
  • Self-Life: 8-10 Months
  • Storage Temp: -300 C
  • Volume: 200-250ml
  • Self-Life: 1 Years
  • Storage Temp: -400 C

PLATELET CONCENTRATE:

  • Random Donor Platelet (RDP): 
  • Volume: 50-60ml (From 1 unit whole blood)
  • Self-Life: 5 days 
  • Storage Temp: 20-240 C with agitation using platelet shaker.
  • Single Donor Platelet (SDP):
  • Volume: 200-400ml (From single donor)
  • Self-Life: 5 days 
  • Storage Temp: 20-240 C with agitation using platelet shaker.
